Weather depressions

Weather depressions are frequently referred to as lows. They can also be named cyclones too, however this would likely panic too many viewers watching weather forecasts. They are sections of low pressure that head over Britain and are responsible for much other weather.

Lows or depressions bring these conditions:

  • Windy weather
  • Cloudy conditions
  • Rain and snow
  • Unstable, changeable weather

Make sure your property is prepared for all weather. Get your guttering fixed by professionals or even get a whole new guttering system installed.

It is simple to identify lows on synoptic charts i.e. weather maps.

  • The isobars (lines which connect places with equal air pressure) are grouped together
  • Air pressure decreases as you travel into the centre of the depression
  • There are frequent weather fronts

In order to "read" a low on a weather map it is vital to remember the following points:

  • Winds blow (more or less) parallel to the isobars
  • The more closely gathered the isobars the faster the wind
  • In the northern hemisphere winds blow in an anticlockwise direction around the centre of the low
  • Fronts mean rain. A warm front indicates a long period of steady rain, whilst a cold and occluded front forecasts a briefer spell of heavy rain
  • The temperature between the cold and warm fronts is greater than outside of them - this hotter area is called the warm sector
  • Usually depressions move west to east across the UK.

Cold weather makes for less pleasant conditions which is why people exercise and get fitter during warmer seasons and why people head inside when it’s cold. Feel healthier at home using chiropractic supplies.
