Training outdoors

Training outdoors is a great way to get fit. While there are plenty of advantages to using a gym, for example you have the opportunity to work on a range of disciples and train multiple parts of the body, training outdoors allows you to get some fresh air and often see some pleasant scenery.

There are many sports whose enjoyability depends very much on the weather. Many games can be called off in adverse weather but surfing is actually better when there is a certain kind of wind.

For example, here is a recent surfing forecast for the south coast:

4-5ft groundswell forecast for Weds and Thurs but no breaks believed with gusty wind. The best option is some beachbreak at Thurlestone and Bigbury, but otherwise forget it. Fri clean at Whitsand Bay, Portwrinkle and Bantham with largely choppy shore surf elsewhere. Sets in the 3-4ft range are believed to happen at these breaks. Thu 2-3ft clean for Compton, Whitsand Bay, Challaborough and Porthleven. Fri glassy 1-2ft sets for Bantham and Porthleven are otherwise changeable and smaller. Sat 2ft clean Hope Cove and Wembury on the sets, with Bantham and Thurlestone rideable 2-3ft later. Sun 2-3ft is clean for Compton, Whitsand Bay, Challaborough, Bantham and Porthleven.

By comparison, the north coast of Ireland’s forecast reads as follows:

6-7ft clean for Mon at Portballintrae with Whiterocks looking good at 5ft too. Tue and Wed blown out with onshore wind and heavy conditions up to 7-8ft in exposed places. Cleaner 4-5ft sets for Thu and Fri with Portrush the pick of the breaks on the north coast and offshore wind mostly steady. Sat 3ft clean and best at Portballintrae on the tidal push. Sun 2-3ft light onshore but still rideable for Portrush, although smaller elsewhere.
